Another Choice

Hello!
I would like to thank each and every one of you for the awesome criticism that you have provided me with. And the back up. :) I am an aspiring writer and I'm grateful for the criticism you have graciously given me. All of it will help me grow as a writer. Thank you!

Yes, I admit, my story is shallow, and is full of mistakes. I'm not perfect. I'm human, so naturally I'm going to make mistakes.
I didn't do all of the extensive research that I know I should have done when I wrote this short story, but I had a few hours until I was supposed to present it to my family. The idea popped into my head and I didn't think twice about writing it.
I wasn't planning on sharing my story with anyone, but my family suggested that I share it on my blog to coincide with Roe Vs. Wade. So I did.

The reason I failed to respond to your comments is because you guys seriously are intimidating. But thank you all the same for the life lessons that you have unknowingly provided me with. :)

The reason I pulled the post, The Choice, is I realized the story is poorly done and I would like to do it over again. I will do my extensive research and post the story when it is polished and refined. :)

God bless each and every one of you! May you have a blessed day. :)

For my real online friends who love me in spite of my mistakes...here is a video that I came across yesterday. I thought you might find it quite humorous. :)

This was a very timely video that Ophelia just posted yesterday.

  1. This humble response is a great example and an encouragement to me, Haley. God bless and happy re-writing!

  2. I want to tell you how very proud of you I am. When you were upset over all of this last night, you didn't lash out. You didn't respond in anger. Instead, you went to the woods to get alone with the Lord. Every situation that drives us to Jesus is a good thing! (Romans 8:28). Wise girl! ~Love, Mom

  3. If you want to become a fiction writer, I would encourage you to find a creative writing workshop. Your local library might offer one, or a local college. The most formal would include lectures on writing and all would include taking turns reading an critiquing one another's work. It is not always easy (one person I knew said he threw up before his stories were critiqued) but it is a valuable experience.

There are also writers' conferences available that may last a day or a weekend that you might want to attend. If you google writer's conference and your state or area, you will likely find some.

I don't know if you already subscribe or read Writer's Digest, but that is also a good place to begin.

    Good luck.

    1. Thank you so much for this advice. I will certainly look into getting into writing groups. I am already a part of a writing forum, but I think I could benefit a little better from what you are suggesting. Thank you so much!

      God bless!

      That is really awesome.

I read a bunch. I eat books for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Wow. Just, wow. Thank you. I can't stress how grateful I am for your offer of being a "first look" editor!
I will most certainly take you up on your offer in the future!
(and thank you for respecting my beliefs. :) )

    3. Yes, we do! :)

      I will certainly do that.

Thank you ahead of time. I am really looking forward to this!

      It is a disservice.
      Thank you for everything. :)

  6. Hey there. Try not to take it too hard. I've been a writer - that is, I have a degree and have actually been paid for writing gigs from time to time (LOL!) - for 15 years. Certainly there are parts of your story that could use work, but you're 17 and this is not a big deal: The best way to learn how to write is by writing and by examining critiques, good or bad, to get as much out of them all as possible.

Anonymous @ 10:12 AM is also correct: Writing workshops are always a good idea, both for the novice and the professional.

Moreover, any time you write something with an ideological bent, regardless of which way you lean, you’re going to take flak. There’s no way around it. Being raked over the coals every now and then is part of putting yourself out there.

    1. Thank you so much for your advice and warning! :)
I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

I have been writing for about seven years now and I have improved a lot, but I am aiming for improving a whole lot more.

I will definitely look into getting into writing workshops.

      Once again, thank you. :)

  7. You are loved in spite of your mistakes!! We all make mistakes and it would be so shallow for anyone to look down on you because of your mistakes. KEEP your head up, God is proud of you for being transparent, not many people can do that!

    God loves you like crazy!!

  8. I'm kind of disappointed I didn't get to join in on the "backup." I arrived too late to join the party.

When everything is taken into consideration (time constraints, etc.), your story was pretty good. But I'll have to agree; it could've been a lot better. But your response to all the attacks and criticism was quite admirable! Good luck with your re-writing; I look forward to seeing the revised edition!

Crazy idea, but... Do you think it would be worth trying to start a writing group within our homeschool group?

Oh, and that video was funny. However, I think there are instances when Trolls and Haters should be engaged...

    1. Haha. Sorry...

I know it could have been better and I fully intend to make it better.
      Thank you very much, Jonny!

I think it's an awesome idea. I talked to my mom and suggested that she be the one to lead the writing group since she has had quite a bit of writing experience. I have a few ideas of what we could do to help us grow in our writing and such, but we can discuss that later. :P

      Haha! I agree. :)

    2. Oh well.

      You're welcome.

Wow, you guys seem to have it all worked out already. That was fast! But yeah, I guess we will discuss it later.

      :)
